Jou Fang Chuan is a martial art that combines the bone attacks of traditional Ketsugo Jujitsu, the weapons flow of Filipino Kali and the internal power of Chinese Wu-Gong (Kung Fu).

 

These are Battlefield Arts and we train for realism and effectiveness. Our foremost concern is that our training is done in a safe manner. If you injure yourself, you lose valuable training time.

 

Martial knowledge was kept alive in Asia, and it is usually presented in an Asian cultural context. This can present obstacles to the Western learner. Part of the core philosophy of Jou Fang Chuan is  "Respect the roots of the art, and present it in a way that fits the learning style of each individual". This keeps the art alive and speeds up learning tremendously. 

 

Why do we focus on weapons training, even for beginners?One must understand how a weapon is used to defeat the weapon. This is the way the majority of martial arts were taught pre 20th century.Empty hand skills were only a backup in case of a lost or broken sword. If you can't defend yourself with a weapon, you sure as hell won't be able to bare-handed. 

 

The Jou Fang Chuan practitioner trains with single and double sticks, knife, short baton (yawara/kubaton), flexible weapons (chain, rope, flail) and the longstaff. This develops understanding of a wide range of properties that enable the practitioner to employ any object as a weapon.

 

The mind is the ultimate weapon and mental training is the key to survival in a conflict. We train the skills of awareness, sensitivity and will to enable the practitioner to create techniques in a fight. We are artists, not robots.
